Brick and Masonry Water Repellent Coating

Brick, stone and concrete masonry look solid, but they are porous. Rain, and especially wind driven rain, is drawn into the pores and carried into the wall, where it causes dampness, efflorescence, staining and mould. A brick water repellent coating lines the pores or forms a film on the surface so that water beads off instead of soaking in. Panache offers a transparent water repellent coating that uses nanotechnology and a film forming sealant grade, so exterior walls stay dry without losing their appearance.

Water Repellent Coating Range

Transparent and film forming protection for brick, masonry and exterior walls

Water repellents for masonry fall into three groups, and Panache offers solutions for the clear penetrating and film forming types. Choose based on how the wall looks, how exposed it is and whether oil and pollution protection is also needed. The complete range is described on the water repellent and sealant page.

Clear Surface Treatment (Penetrating Repellents)

a nanotechnology based repellent absorbed into the face of the masonry. It lines the pores and works as a penetrating sealant, and it does not change the look of the brick. Silicone, silicone resin, silane and siloxane are the chemistries used for penetrating repellents, and they can be hydrophobic, which repels water, or oleophobic, which repels oil.

Film Forming Sealants (Topical Sealants)

a resin based sealant, such as acrylic, that forms a continuous surface over the masonry. It gives complete sealing and water repelling properties along with oil and pollution protection.

Integral Water Repellents

added to masonry materials before the wall is built, so that water resistance is part of the material.

What Is a Water Repellent Coating?

Technology: Hydrophobic Surface Treatment

A hydrophobic wall coating changes how water behaves on the surface. Untreated brick has open capillary pores that pull water inward. A penetrating repellent enters these pores and lines their walls, so water cannot wet them. The pores stay open, which means water vapour can still leave the wall, but liquid water is kept out.

This difference is important. A wall has to dry as well as stay dry. A repellent that lets vapour escape prevents moisture from being trapped behind the surface, which is a common cause of spalling and paint failure.

Film forming sealants work differently. They build a continuous layer on the surface and block water, oil and pollution from the top. Integral repellents work from inside the material. Panache clear repellents apply nanotechnology to reach into fine pores, which gives the exterior wall water repellent effect without a visible film.

Importance of Water Repellent Coating

Wind driven rain is one of the main ways water enters an exterior wall. Once inside, moisture damages plaster and paint, reduces the insulating value of the wall, carries salts to the surface as efflorescence and supports mould and mildew growth.

A repellent coating reduces these problems. It resists wind driven rain, reduces efflorescence and environmental staining, protects interiors from water damage, prevents mould and mildew, and helps maintain the appearance of brick and masonry over time. A dry wall also supports long term comfort, because damp walls feel colder in winter and hotter in summer and encourage indoor humidity.

Exterior wall protection should be part of the full envelope approach. Heat is managed with high SRI wall systems and insulation, and water is managed with repellents and roof waterproofing. Together they protect the building and lower maintenance over its life.

Our Solutions

Exterior surfaces face both water and heat. A cool roof coating handles the heat side. It consists of a binder, usually organic or silicone, blended with pigments and additives, and it protects the roof membrane while reflecting solar radiation.

The main components are the binder, pigments, reflective pigments and water. Water is the liquid carrier, and most white coatings are water based.

The Panache white reflective elastomeric coating can reflect up to 92 percent of visible light and keeps the roof much cooler than aluminium, black or non-reflective roofing, which reduces energy use and adds years to the roof.
