Cool Roof Paint and Heat Proof Paint

Cool roof paint is a heat reflective paint that sends a large share of incoming sunlight, especially near infrared radiation, back into the atmosphere instead of letting the roof absorb it. A conventional roof surface turns that radiation into heat and passes it indoors. A high reflective paint with high thermal emittance keeps the roof surface cooler, which reduces heat ingress into the building and lowers the load on air conditioning. The performance of any cool roof paint or heat proof paint is measured by its Solar Reflective Index (SRI).

Cool Roof Paint Range

Green Pro certified roof cooling paint systems for roofs, walls and pavements

Panache offers a Green Pro certified range of cool roof paints and heat reflective systems for roofs, walls, pavements, cycle tracks, driveways and roads. Each system works on NIR reflection technology and nanotechnology, so the surface generates less heat at the source and less heat enters the building. Choose the system that matches the substrate and the expected performance level.

What Is Cool Roof Paint?

Technology: IR Reflection Technology

Solar radiation reaches the earth as a mix of ultraviolet, visible and infrared energy. Almost 58 to 60 percent of it is infrared radiation. A standard roof absorbs this energy and converts it into heat. Roofs, walls, roads, industrial sheds, tanks and every other built structure with low reflectivity and low emissivity heat up under the sun. They pass that heat indoors and release it into the surrounding air at surface temperatures of 60 to 75 °C.

A heat reflective paint works at the surface. Its pigments and binder reflect infrared radiation away from the building, so the substrate does not heat up in the first place. Lower surface temperature means less heat conducted through the slab or sheet, and less heat released into the atmosphere.

Thermal emittance is the second property that matters. It is the ability of a surface to radiate away the heat it has absorbed, and it is especially useful in warm, sunny climates. High reflectance together with high emittance allows roofs to stay up to 20 to 28 °C cooler and walls up to 10 °C cooler than conventional materials during peak summer. The measure of a good cool surface material is its SRI value, and a well performing cool roof paint delivers an SRI above 100.

Importance of Cool Roof Paint

Rapid urbanisation has created concrete dense cities where surface temperatures reach up to 70 °C. The result is warmer city air and a stronger Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. When the ambient temperature is 45 °C, a metal surface can reach 80 °C and a cement surface 65 to 70 °C. Heat proof paint addresses the problem where it starts, on the roof.

High solar gain, heat stress and hot conditions last through most of the year in India. A growing middle class, a growing construction sector and rising incomes have increased the demand for thermal comfort, and that demand is being met mainly with air conditioners, which are among the largest sources of electricity consumption in a building.

A cool roof is a reliable and environmentally friendly passive strategy. Raising the albedo, or solar reflectance, of a roof reduces unwanted solar heat gain. This saves electricity, lowers peak power demand, reduces the need for air conditioning and curbs pollution. It also cools the air around the building, which helps mitigate the UHI effect and improves air quality by slowing the reactions that produce smog.

Cool surfaces reduce UHI intensity and building cooling loads. That lowers demand for electricity and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. The effectiveness of a cool surface is assessed using several criteria, including the Solar Reflective Index and the variation in air temperature. Our Solutions

  • Cooler roofs and walls mean a longer life for the roof and wall, with crack prevention and a direct contribution to indoor cooling.
  • Since its inception, Panache has worked on high SRI coatings and systems that meet real application challenges and hold their aged SRI values, keeping the Indian atmosphere and Indian construction practices in mind.
  • Application of Cool Tops reduces the metal surface temperature by 25 °C and the cement surface temperature by 18 to 20 °C. This improves thermal comfort indoors and reduces HVAC load. The Cool Tops and Cool Wrap range has the potential to reduce city temperature by 2 to 3 °C, as stated by GCCA and LBNL, which makes cool roofing one of the most viable ways to address climate change and global warming.
  • Panache high SRI coatings can be applied on any substrate exposed to solar radiation. The coating reflects infrared radiation, and it combines high emissivity with high SRI or albedo.

Application Areas

Roof

Cool roof paint is applied on RCC roofs, metal sheets, water tanks and other roof mounted structures of commercial buildings, offices, malls and green buildings. Roofs receive the highest solar load in a building, so a roof cooling paint gives the largest reduction in heat gain.

Pavement

Roads, pathways, cycle tracks and driveways can be treated with high SRI paint to reduce the heat stored in paved surfaces and released after sunset.

Wall

Exterior walls facing the sun gain heat through the day. High SRI wall systems reduce that gain, with walls staying up to 10 °C cooler.

A cool roof coating consists of a binder, usually an organic or silicone compound, blended with pigments and other additives. It delivers two main benefits: protection of the roof membrane for a longer roof life cycle, and reflection of solar radiation for lower air conditioning costs.

The main components of most cool roof coatings are the binder, pigments, reflective pigments and water. Water acts as the liquid carrier that gives the coating its viscosity, so it can be spread on the roof as a thin film. Most white coatings in use today are water based.

An energy efficient white reflective elastomeric coating manufactured by Panache can reflect up to 92 percent of visible light, keeping the roof surface much cooler than aluminium, black or non-reflective roofing materials. Lower temperatures mean lower energy use and money saved. Elastomeric roof coatings also protect the roof substrate, add years to the roof and avoid costly tear-offs and re-roofing.
