A reflective, or “cool,” coating does one job: it stops a roof from absorbing solar radiation in the first place, instead of trying to remove heat after it’s already inside the building. The difference matters, because once heat has transferred through a roof deck, cooling it back down costs energy. Reflecting it before it transfers costs nothing extra once the coating is applied.
How Reflectivity Actually Works
Two properties determine how “cool” a coating is: solar reflectance (how much sunlight it bounces back rather than absorbs) and thermal emissivity (how efficiently it releases whatever heat it does absorb). Together these are expressed as the Solar Reflectance Index, or SRI — the industry benchmark architects and green building assessors use to compare roofing and coating products.
