White is the most familiar cool roof colour because a white surface reflects a large share of visible light. A white roof coating goes further by combining reflective pigments with a flexible binder, so the roof reflects sunlight, resists weather and stays cooler. White reflective paint reduces the heat that enters the building and lowers air conditioning demand. Panache manufactures a white reflective elastomeric coating that can reflect up to 92 percent of visible light, and a high SRI range built on IR reflection technology.
White and high SRI roof coating systems for roofs, walls and pavements
Panache offers Green Pro certified high SRI products and systems for roofs, walls, pavements, cycle tracks, driveways and roads. They use NIR reflection technology and nanotechnology, which reduces surface heat and the entry of heat indoors. See the reflective options under reflecting coatings.
A white roof coating is a water based elastomeric coating made of a binder, white and reflective pigments, additives and water. The binder, usually an organic or silicone compound, holds the pigments together and bonds the coating to the roof. It also gives the coating the elasticity to move with the roof as it expands and contracts.
The pigments do the cooling work. They reflect visible light and near infrared radiation. This matters because almost 58 to 60 percent of solar radiation is infrared, and that is the part which turns into heat when absorbed. A surface that reflects infrared keeps the substrate from heating up.
High thermal emittance lets the coating radiate away the heat it does absorb. With both properties, roofs stay up to 20 to 28 °C cooler and walls up to 10 °C cooler than conventional materials in peak summer. A good cool surface has an SRI above 100.
Dark or bare roofs are the hottest surfaces on a building. At an ambient temperature of 45 °C, metal roofs can reach 80 °C and cement roofs 65 to 70 °C. That heat conducts into the space below and is released into the surrounding air, which contributes to the Urban Heat Island effect.
A white reflective roof reduces solar gain and cools the air around the building. It saves electricity, lowers peak power demand, reduces the need for air conditioning and slows the reactions that create smog, so air quality improves.
The coating also protects the roof. Elastomeric white coatings guard the roof membrane against sun and weather and add years to the roof, which avoids costly tear-offs and re-roofing. Lower roof temperature means less thermal movement in the roof, so fewer cracks develop.
The reflectivity of a white surface can fall as dust and dirt collect on it, so the aged SRI value is as important as the initial one. Panache designs its systems to maintain aged SRI values under Indian conditions.

A cool roof coating consists of a binder, usually an organic compound or silicone compound, blended with pigments and other additives. It gives two main benefits: protection of the roof membrane for a longer roof life cycle, and reflection of solar radiation for lower air conditioning cost.
The main components of most cool roof coatings are the binder, pigment, water and reflective pigments. Water is the liquid carrier that gives the viscosity to spread the pigment and binder on the roof as a thin coating. The majority of white coatings in use today are water based.
An energy efficient white reflective elastomeric coating manufactured by Panache can reflect up to 92 percent of visible light, keeping the roof surface much cooler than aluminium, black or non-reflective roofing materials. Lower temperatures mean less energy use and money saved. Elastomeric roof coatings protect the roof substrate, add years to the roof and avoid costly tear-offs and re-roofing.
