Cool Roof Coating India

A cool roof coating is a high SRI, solar reflective coating that reduces the amount of solar heat a roof absorbs. In India, where intense sun, high ambient temperatures and dense construction combine for most of the year, a cool roof coating is one of the most direct ways to lower indoor temperature and air conditioning demand. Panache Greentech Solutions, based in Vadodara, manufactures cool roof coatings developed for Indian weather and Indian construction practices. The performance of a high SRI material is expressed by its Solar Reflective Index, and it works on IR reflection technology.

Cool Roof Coating Range for Indian Buildings

Green Pro certified high SRI systems for roofs, walls and pavements, manufactured in India

Panache manufactures a Green Pro certified range of high SRI coatings and systems for roofs, walls, pavements, cycle tracks, driveways and roads. The range works on NIR reflection technology and nanotechnology to reduce the generation of heat on the surface and the ingress of heat into the building. It suits the common Indian roof types, from RCC terraces to metal sheet roofs.

What Is Cool Roof Coating?

Technology: IR Reflection Technology

Nearly 58 to 60 percent of the solar radiation that reaches the earth is infrared. A conventional Indian roof, whether it is a cement terrace, a metal shed or a tank top, absorbs this infrared energy and turns it into heat. The surface temperature climbs to 60 to 75 °C, and the heat travels indoors through the slab or the sheet.

A cool roof coating reflects the infrared portion of the spectrum at the surface. The roof does not warm up as much, so less heat is conducted into the building and less is released into the surrounding air. Reflectance is only half of the picture. Thermal emittance, the ability of the surface to give off the heat it has absorbed, matters just as much in warm and sunny regions.

Together, high reflectance and high emittance keep roofs up to 20 to 28 °C cooler and walls up to 10 °C cooler than conventional materials in peak summer. A good cool surface material is identified by an SRI value above 100. When you compare cool roof coating suppliers in India, ask for the SRI value along with the aged SRI value, because reflectivity that drops after one monsoon does not deliver lasting savings.

Importance of Cool Roof Coating in India

India is urbanising quickly, and concrete surfaces in Indian cities can reach temperatures up to 70 °C. That raises the air temperature of the whole city and strengthens the Urban Heat Island effect. At an ambient temperature of 45 °C, a metal roof can reach 80 °C, and a cement roof 65 to 70 °C.

Heat stress lasts through most of the year, and the middle class, the construction sector and per capita incomes are all growing. The result is a steep rise in the purchase of air conditioners, which are among the biggest contributors to electricity demand in a building. Every degree removed from the roof surface reduces the work the air conditioner has to do.

A cool roof is a reliable, environmentally friendly and passive strategy for mitigating UHI. Raising the solar reflectance of a roof reduces solar heat gain, saves electricity, lowers peak power demand and curbs pollution. It also cools the outside air and slows the chemical reactions that produce smog, which improves air quality.

The cooling load of a building and the intensity of the heat island both fall when cool surfaces are adopted at scale. That means less electricity generated and lower greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. The effectiveness of a cool surface is assessed with criteria such as SRI and the variation in air temperature.

Our Solutions

  • Cooler roofs and walls last longer, resist cracking and contribute to indoor cooling.
  • Panache has focused since its inception on high SRI coatings and systems that keep their aged SRI values, keeping the Indian atmosphere and the way Indian buildings are constructed in mind.
  • Cool Tops lowers the metal surface temperature by 25 °C and the cement surface temperature by 18 to 20 °C, improving indoor comfort and reducing HVAC load. Cool Tops and Cool Wrap have the potential to reduce city temperature by 2 to 3 °C, as stated by GCCA and LBNL, so adopting them helps address climate change and global warming.
  • Panache high SRI coatings can be applied on any substrate exposed to solar radiation. They reflect infrared radiation and offer high emissivity, high SRI and high albedo.

A cool roof coating is made of a binder, which is usually an organic or silicone compound, blended with pigments and additives. It protects the roof membrane for a longer service life and reflects solar radiation to lower air conditioning costs.

Most cool roof coatings contain a binder, pigments, reflective pigments and water. Water works as the liquid carrier and gives the coating the viscosity to be spread as a thin layer. The majority of white coatings used today are water based.

The energy efficient white reflective elastomeric coating manufactured by Panache can reflect up to 92 percent of visible light and keeps the roof surface much cooler than aluminium, black or non-reflective roofing. Lower temperatures reduce energy use and save money, and the elastomeric coat protects the substrate, adds years to the roof and avoids the cost of tear-offs and re-roofing.
